Tánaiste’s visit to Lough Funshinagh in County Roscommon brought forward

Tánaiste Michéal Martin’s visit to Lough Funshinagh in County Roscommon has been brought forward by nine days.

The Tánaiste will be visiting the flood affected area in South Roscommon on May 22 instead of the previously announced date of May 31.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the Attorney General Rossa A. Fanning will meet OPW Minister Kieran O’Donnell on Friday about the crisis and the options for emergency work in the area.

The water level at the Lough has continued to rise in recent weeks resulting in a threat to a fifth home in the area while water continues to flow towards Curraghboy village.

Three roads in the area have been closed and many residents have already evacuated the area – including a mother and her three children.

Since 2016, this turlough - or disappearing lake - is not draining as it did previously and the water levels at Lough Funshinagh are currently at their highest recorded levels 69.37 mOD.

Tánaiste, Micheal Martin TD was invited to the area by local Independent councillor Laurence Fallon.

Speaking about the invitation, Cllr Fallon said he wrote to the three Government leaders last month, inviting them to visit Lough Funshinagh to view the emergency situation that has developed.

Cllr Fallon confirmed the new date for the meeting.
