A County Roscommon TD has called for a review to carried out into the fire service in County Roscommon due to safety concerns.

Roscommon TD Claire Kerrane has asked the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to instruct Roscommon County Council to undertake a review of the fire service in County Roscommon or for the Minister to initiate a review himself.

The call comes as Castlerea Fire Station remains closed with no immediate plan in place for its reopening.

The station has been closed since 2017.

Deputy Kerrane said the station provides a ‘life or death service’ and it is essential that it is reopened.

"It is beyond obvious that we need to see Castlerea Fire Station re-opened.

"Despite raising this with Roscommon County Council repeatedly for years now, including before my election, it is time for the Minister now to intervene.

"This is a life or death service and I will continue to pursue it over and over again until the service is returned to the second biggest town in the County,” said Deputy Kerrane.
