Just as the runners and riders steadied themselves for the start of the Grand National on Saturday, Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue announced his Department would pay any farmers who plant a field crop this year €100/ha.

It comes as the weather continues to make many farms a battleground as sodden conditions remain thanks to continued rain across the country.
