Factories ‘taking advantage of farmers’ weather problems’ – IFA

‘Market conditions and the supplies of finished cattle justify stronger beef prices’

‘The two big drivers for the factories at present appear to be the need to get more manufacturing beef, and holding prices where they are at’

Martin Coughlan

The factories have been accused of “unacceptable attempts to take advantage of the weather-related difficulties farmers are enduring” by trying to pull prices.

In a strongly worded statement, IFA livestock chair Declan Hanrahan claimed that current prices are “currently over 10c/kg behind this time last year, while beef prices in our largest market, the UK, are running over 12c/kg ahead of last year”.
