There was a great gathering in Roe River Books, Clanbrassil Street, recently for the launch of The She Team Does Lockdown by retired Dundalk teacher Susan McGovern.

Susan was joined by family, friends and former colleagues for the launch of her second children’s book which was launched by author Florence Gillan, author of fLet Them Lie and The Forfeit, two psychological thrillers. In

Having retired from O’Fiach College ten years ago, Susan embarked on a new career as an author.

Her first venture into the world of writing was a factual book Care and Prevention of Urinary Problems in Cats. Susan, who has a degree in biochemistry from Trinity College Dublin, produced the guide after looking after her own cat Trig.

She followed that up with a novel called Vanished, while her third book was a collection of short stories Thanks for the Memories about people with Alzheimers and their families. This was inspired by her experience of caring for her parents, who are now deceased, after they were diagnosed with Alzheimers within three years of each other.

Susan then turned to children’s fiction for her fourth book, The She Team, which describes the escapades of four cats and a dog. While the lockdowns that followed the start of the COVID-19 pandemic four years ago now seem very far away, Susan’s latest book The She Team Does Lockdown, is a reminder of how the restrictions affected everyone, especially children.

In launching the book, Florence referred to the difficulties experienced during the lockdowns and made the point that it would have been nice to have animals with superpowers to help us deal with them.

Susan talked about the real animals and explained why the book was dedicated to Ebi, a beautiful cat who passed away in 2022. The book is also dedicated to her son and daughter-in-law who rescued Ebi and another cat Trig and her husband, Padraig, who rescued, Smig the cat and Mags the dog. Extracts from the book were read by Béibhinn Harris and Sarah Gilbert.

The She Team Does Lockdown is suitable for children aged 6 to 12 and is on sale in Roe River Books and online on www.susanmcgovern.ie and www.buythebook.ie.
