Cllr Avril Cronin is calling for improved road safety measures for Donard, for both pedestrians and motorists.

She has raised the issue with Wicklow County Council and engineers have visited the site to access the road with the view to improving safety for all involved, though a new footpath has been ruled out on the short-term as the road is considered too narrow.

Cllr Cronin stated: “I have received a number of calls and emails from local residents concerned about road safety from the Day Care Centre and the primary school in Donard. The Donard Day Care centre provides a vital childcare service for families in the area, also providing an after-school service which benefits many working families.

“Children are walking to and from the Day Care Centre to the primary school and safety is a concern for all. We want to encourage people to become more active, and walk where possible. With plans for new developments in the pipeline within the area, I would hope that a footpath could be considered in the future. Unfortunately as it stands the road is too narrow to allow for a footpath”

Recently, the speed limits have been changed within the school zone and the signs have been moved approaching the village to encourage motorist to slow down on approach.

“I will continue to work with Wicklow County Council and the local community on this matter” added Cllr Cronin.
