Bus shelters are needed along the routes taken by Local Link and private bus companies.

This was the view expressed by Wexford County Council chairman, Cllr John Fleming at the April New Ross Municipal District meeting.

TFI Local Link Wexford offers numerous services across the district and county, including launching a new bus service on Monday, April 15, which will improve connectivity between New Ross and Enniscorthy. This new route is part of the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan which is a major national public transport initiative developed and funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) as part of the Transport for Ireland (TFI) Network.

Route 359 will operate five daily return services Monday to Saturday and three daily return services on Sunday and public holidays, creating a new connection from New Ross to Enniscorthy.

The new route will provide a peak-time service for commuters to New Ross, an early morning service to Enniscorthy facilitating onward travel to Carlow and Dublin, as well as improved connectivity to regional bus and rail services. The route will offer enhanced connectivity to villages and areas of New Ross, Rathgarogue, Ballywilliam, Rathnure, Killanne, Kiltealy, Ballindaggan and Enniscorthy.

Cllr Fleming said communities are having to take the initiative in rural Wexford to ensure shelter for bus users, mentioning Rathnure, where a concrete shelter has been erected.

"No matter where you are going you need a shelter. It's a serious issue,” he said.

District director of services, Eamonn Hore said he joined the board of Local Link recently and plans to try to progress the provision of bus shelters, which are ultimately a decision for the National Transport Authority.

"We are looking at putting some funding towards this.” Cllr Pat Barden said bus shelters are also needed at Ballinaboola and near Good Counsel College.
