A major clean up has taken place at the halting site outside New Ross, with new mobile homes having parked at bays there.

Councillors vented their frustrations at the April New Ross Municipal District meeting that they had not been kept up to speed about developments at the halting site.

Housing officer Martina Donoghue said families had to be allowed into the halting site on an emergency basis. “It’s even growing bigger and bigger,” the meeting heard.

Cllr Michael Sheehan said: “There was a huge effort to put everything in there for residents. I wish that efficiency was put into all our housing repairs.”

Ms Donoghue said she had previously indicated that four families would be availing of the caravan scheme at Marshmeadows.

“These families are on the site so it was a case of improving their accommodation and regularising them. The six families in bays one to six would have had first refusal on caravan loans and not one of them availed of them. They are all Wexford families. There were other families there who are no longer on the halting site.”

Ms Donoghue said the families in Marshmeadows who have availed of the scheme will have to repay the money owed over time and maintain the caravans.

When a councillor raised the issue of dumping at the site, Ms Donoghue said Wexford County Council’s preference would be for every bay to have its own bin. She said slip roads within the site have been completely closed off to prevent illegal occupancy.
