Sligo bereavement counsellor Liam Neville recognised for his contribution to the profession

The IACP Regional Awards recognise an IACP accredited member who makes a notable contribution to the profession of counselling and psychotherapy in their local community and region.

IACP Cathaoirleach Séamus Sheedy stated: “I would like sincerely congratulate Liam Neville, the West North-West Regional Award honouree for his tremendous contributions to West North-West region and beyond. Liam served with dedication and esteem for six-plus years as chairperson of the WNW Regional Committee. I admire his commitment to the welfare of student therapists and supervisors and applaud his contribution to this area at local and national levels.”

Mr Neville is a mental health professional with more than 30 years of experience, and has worked in a range of mental health areas, from addictions, complex mental health, and specialising in bereavement, and developmental trauma.

“I am accepting this award on behalf of the many students, pre accredited therapists and therapists who have worked alongside me for many years in providing counselling – psychotherapy for the HSE Bereavement Service to the people of Sligo – Leitrim.

He holds a foundation training in Psychiatric Nursing and a four-year degree in Counselling & Psychotherapy. He furthered his knowledge by training in - Advanced Diploma in Trauma Management, Diploma in Supervision, Diploma in Spirituality, and becoming an accredited IACP Counsellor/Psychotherapist and Supervisor in 2005.

Currently, Mr Neville coordinates the HSE Sligo-Leitrim Traumatic Bereavement Service, and is Interim co-coordinator of the HSE National Counselling Service Childhood Trauma Service, coordinating a team of accredited, pre-accredited, and student therapists. He manages the waiting lists, client screening - assessment, and allocations. Additionally, he facilitates a range of reflective practice groups and has specialised in psychological Critical Incident Response across the region.

In the early 1990s, he was instrumental in establishing two charities, Advocates for the Victims of Homicide (AdVic), and Support after Homicide (SAH) providing outreach support to bereaved families by homicide nationwide.

Mr Neville has been a member of the IACP West North-West Committee, for a number of years was the previous chairperson, and has severed on the IACP Board of Directors since 2021. His contributions include presenting motions at the IACP National AGM’s positively impacting the welfare of students, counsellors, and supervisors, and ultimately enhancing client welfare.

The West North-West Regional Award was presented at the IACP’s 9th annual conference on Saturday in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Sligo.
