Man (31) in court charged with damaging Garda vehicles in Sligo street

The man was arrested following an incident at St Brigid's Place.

A man has been remanded in custody for a week after he appeared at Sligo District Court on a number of charges, including causing damage to two Garda vehicles in an incident at St Brigid’s Place last Wednesday.

Sergeant Keith Marron gave evidence of the arrest, charge and caution of Damien O’Sullivan (31) of St Brigid’s Place.

The defendant is charged with having a hatchet intended to cause injury to, incapacitate or intimidate a person either in a particular eventuality or to prevent his lawful arrest by members of An Garda Siochana contrary to Section 9 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act on May 1 at St Brigid’s Place.

He is also charged that while committing an offence-criminal damage in the course of a dispute-produced a hatchet capable of inflicting serious injury contrary to Section 11 of the Firearams and Offensive Weapons Act.

And he is further charged with causing criminal damage to two official Garda vehicles, a Hyundai Tucson and a Ford Transit Van.

O’Sullivan is further charged with causing criminal damage to the value of €300 to the front door window of Breege Mahon at Racecourse View, Cranmore on April 23

He is charged with the unlawful taking of a Yamaha Scramble motor cycle without the consent of owner, Francis Downey on April 18 at Joe McDonnell Drive, Cranmore.

A bail application was made by Mr Gerard McGovern, solicitor (defending) but this was rejected by Judge Cieran Liddy and the defendant was remanded in custody until May 9.
