Two apple trees have been planted in the garden of the Sacred Heart Hospital in Carlow to celebrate ‘Earth Day’.

The trees were donated by Colm O’ Brien in memory of his mother Kathleen and by Topline Doyle’s. They were planted, respectively, by residents Ann Ryan (and her husband Tom Ryan) and Jim MacAssey.

"It’s a chance for all of us to celebrate our planet, to raise awareness about environmental conservation and to encourage action for a healthier and more sustainable future,” said Jenny Dowling, Director of Nursing at the Sacred Heart Hospital.

“The garden is an important feature of life for residents at the Sacred Heart, as is our ongoing activities programme,” added Activities Co-ordinator in the Sacred Heart, Deirdre Hilliard.

"We were looking forward to this occasion and extend our thanks to those who donated the trees and who came along to share Earth Day with us here. It’s very much in the spirit of the Earth Day message, in that together we can make a meaningful impact and create a more sustainable world.”
