Two people have been arrested after gardaí discovered a MDMA pill manufacturing facility in Co Laois.

Two people were arrested and a large sum of money was seized during the operation on Wednesday.

The man, aged in his 50s, and the woman, aged in her 40s, were detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at a Garda Station in Co. Laois.

The Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau seized €200,000 cash and a substantial amount of controlled drugs following the searches in Co Laois on April 24.

This seizure was made during follow up searches which formed part of the operation on Tuesday April 23 in Co Meath which resulted in the recovery of €2.4m of cannabis by Revenue Customs Officers.

During the course of these searches cash in excess of €200,000, €140,000 suspected cannabis, €10,000 suspected MDMA tablets and a substantial amount of counterfeit prescription tablets were seized.

Gardaí said: “A sophisticated illicit pill making facility, including a pill press, was also seized.”

All items of evidence recovered will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for further examination.

Gardaí say investigations are ongoing.
