Man (20s) killed in Roscommon crash, while woman (50s) dies days after being hit by van in Dublin

A man aged in his 20s has died after the car he was driving collided with a lorry in Co Roscommon last night.

Meanwhile, a woman aged in her 50s has died in Dublin in hospital several days after she was struck by a van in Ringsend last week.

The latest deaths bring the number of people who have lost their lives on Irish roads this year to 55, according to official garda statistics.

Sixteen people have died on Irish roads this month alone, an average of more than one death every two days.

Gardaí in Roscommon are appealing for witnesses to the fatal collision in which the man in his 20s died, which occurred shortly before 10pm on Wednesday night. Gardaí received a report of a serious collision involving a lorry and a car on the N61 Athlone Road at Newtown.

The driver of the car was removed from the scene by ambulance to Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe, where he was later pronounced dead.

The road at the scene is currently closed with local traffic diversions in place.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are examining the scene, and the local coroner has been notified.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N61 at Newtown at the time of the collision are asked to make the footage available.

Gardaí also renewed their appeal this morning for witnesses to the Ringsend crash. Shortly before 8am last Wednesday, a van struck a female pedestrian at the junction of Cambridge Road and Thorncastle Street. The woman was treated at St Vincent’s University Hospital but died from her injuries last weekend.

An Garda Síochána are continuing to appeal to any witnesses of this collision to come forward. They are also appealing to anyone with video footage (including dash-cam) from the area between 7.45am and 8.15am on March 20 to make this available.
