Generation Z might have their own TikTok language, but it seems the kids could be “vibing” our ancient language of Irish.

Eimear O’Reilly (26) not only runs her own tattoo parlour, Inner Self Tattoo Studio in Blackrock, Co Dublin, she has her own podcast and thousands of followers on Instagram.

If anyone is on the pulse when it comes to the slang young people are spouting these days, it is her. She said: “If I put up a photo online and look really pretty, someone might respond, ‘Oh, mother’.

It’s very sweet, it’s like idolising someone, it’s bigging up the girl. It came from pop stars like Lady Gaga. “If you’re doing well at something or even if you bought a new T-shirt, someone might say ‘pop off’.

“‘Slay’ is something that has come about in the last two years. ‘Slay’ means you’re doing great. People would say ‘You slay the day away’ or ‘Your outfit is slay’.
