It might not have been the winning debut he had hoped for, but it was still a good Good Friday for Rob Monahan as the Ardfert man scored a superb goal on his first appearance for the Carlton Blues reserves in their VFL (Victorian Football League) opening game of the season.

After a first round bye, the Blues’ second string, coached by Luke Power, travelled to the Arden Street Oval in North Melbourne to face the hosts, but a disappointing final quarter saw the visitors defeated on a final score of 90 to 74.

Nevertheless, it was a memorable debut for former Kerry minor and under-20 football Monahan who marked his first competitive game with a goal. His moment to remember arrived in the third quarter, with the Kilmoyley man kicking a monster set shot from all of 50 metres. He was engulfed by his team-mates, who revelled in his first competitive goal since his switch Down Under.

Named in the half-forward line, as one of seven newcomers in the Carlton line-up, the 19-year-old, who signed as a Category ‘B’ rookie last year, also finished the contest with five disposals, one mark, and two tackles. However, despite hitting the front in quarter four, the Blues fell to three late Kangaroo goals.

With his confidence further boosted by getting off the mark, the former GAA dual star – who played football with Ardfert and hurling with Kilmoyley – will play in front of the Carlton fans for the first time on Sunday, April 14, when they entertain Collingwood. That will be the beginning of three successive home VFL fixtures with Port Melbourne and Geelong to follow.
