A young boy from Donegal who burnt his arm on a heater at a holiday camp in France has been awarded €10,000 in compensation.

At Letterkenny Circuit Court on Tuesday, Judge John Aylmer approved the offer of €10,000 to the young boy who sustained the injury on June 17, 2018.

At the time of the incident at Eurocamp in France, the boy who is now seven years old, was almost two years old.

The incident occurred when the boy was running around the cabin and he struck his arm on a heater and suffered a burn.

Following the incident, the child was given first aid at the scene and a cream was used to the burn.

A photograph of the burn was handed into court by the defence.

The court heard that when the child returned home, he attended a local GP and was given cream for the burn.

A year later, the boy returned to the doctor and the GP observed faint discolouration at the scar area but the wound was healing well and there was no psychological issues.

The court also heard that movement of the arm was not impacted by the injury, there was no residual scarring and barrister Mr Peter Nolan acknowledged that recovery level was very good.

Mr Nolan said the guidelines on compensation for burns was limited, and added there was a concern that liability could be apportioned to the parents in the form of contributory negligence which had been alleged by the other side.

Mr Nolan said ‘it would be wise to accept the offer.’

Judge John Aylmer said it was fortunate that the boy had made an excellent recovery and was happy to approve the offer which included circuit court costs.
