Funeral details announced for Derry man who died in hill walking incident in County Donegal

The funeral of a Derry man who died while hill walking in County Donegal will be held on Thursday.

Brian Campbell, of 42 Woodbrook West, Derry, died tragically on Saturday when he sustained fatal injuries after a fall while he was walking with another man in the Poisoned Glen area of Dunlewey, County Donegal.

Gardaí and the emergency services were notified at around 1pm on Saturday, April 20.

Following a recovery operation, he was taken from the mountain and transported to the mortuary at Letterkenny University Hospital.

The second person, also a male in his late 50s, suffered injuries and was airlifted from the scene to Letterkenny University Hospital.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Mr Campbell was married to Donna and a father of two – Caomhán and Nicole.

His wake will commence on Tuesday from 11am to 10pm and on Wednesday from 11am to 10pm.

Donegal Mountain Rescue Team has expressed their condolences to the Campbell family.

A spokesperson for DMRT described the call-out as a ‘difficult and hugely technical incident.’

“On Saturday, April 20, 2024, DMRT were tasked at 13:24 hours by AGS Galway to Poison Glenn and were put on full stand-by.

“Once more information was obtained, it was established that there had been a catastrophic accident involving two climbers, one of which had not survived.

“Rescue 118 was tasked to the scene as the DMRT hasty team made their way to the rendezvous point.

"As members of the team approached the casualty's location, Rescue 118 was already on scene and, after a difficult and technical extraction, airlifted the second casualty to Letterkenny Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“The team's rope technicians proceeded to set up two complex rope systems in order to recover the remaining casualty.

"They maneuvered the stretcher back to the RV point where AGS and NAS were waiting.

“The team was stood down at 22:59 hours.

“Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the deceased.

“We wish to express our sincerest thanks to everyone involved in this difficult and hugely technical incident, including Rescue 118 , An Garda Síochána and National Ambulance Service (NAS).”

Mr Campbell is survived by his wife Donna, children Caomhán and Nicole, siblings Pauline, Donna, Paul, Jacqueline, Neil and Stephen, nieces and nephews, his wider family circle and friends.
