With summer in sight, now’s a great time to start thinking about how to revitalise your outdoor space. Whether you’ve a modest balcony or patio, a sprawling garden or a rooftop terrace, it’s all about creating a seamless flow between indoors and out.

Furniture that serves multiple purposes is a must. If you have the space, a modular outdoor sofa can be rearranged to serve any occasion, be it a large family gathering or a cosy evening for two. Look for options with built-in storage to keep cushions and throws handy but hidden.

Thankfully the days of stiff, uncomfortable outdoor seating are gone and there’s so much selection in the shops. Opt for materials that are plush but don’t compromise on durability. Weather-resistant fabrics are recommended — they are going to have to stand up to Irish summers, after all!

Investing in a statement piece like a hammock or a swing chair can add a touch of whimsy and relaxation to your outdoors.

The garden is a great place to really go for eye-catching prints across cushions and decor. Not only can these be easily swapped out, allowing you to experiment, but if you’re lucky enough to have a lot of green space, bold colour and prints create a beautiful contrast. I’m a big fan of outdoor rugs, which can make a terrace or deck feel as cosy and inviting as a living room.

Even the most petite courtyard or patio can be transformed under the soft glow of string lighting. Solar-powered lights are a great sustainable choice that require minimum investment so consider these when it comes to decorative fairy lights or even functional pathway lighting.

For a touch of sophistication, consider an outdoor chandelier or pendant lights, especially for covered areas like porches or terraces. Touches like macrame wall hangings, outdoor mirrors and ceramic ornaments not only add style but also help define different areas of your outdoor space.

When it comes to planting, incorporate native plants which are not only easier to maintain but also help support local wildlife. Opt for planters in natural materials like terracotta or recycled wood. If you’re dealing with a small balcony or area, use vertical space wisely with hanging planters and wall-mounted decor. Vertical gardens allow you to maximise greenery without sacrificing square footage.
