‘Why not, when there is so much happening?’ – 89-year-old activist Margaretta D’Arcy on why she is running in the local elections

Artist, Aosdána member and peace activist Margaretta D’Arcy may be approaching 90 in June, but that hasn’t stopped her declaring her candidacy for the local elections in Galway.

“And why not, when there is so much happening – and at my age, there’s not much they can throw at you anyway,” D’Arcy told The Sunday Independent.

With “mad, bad and dangerous” being one of her campaign slogans, D’Arcy is standing on a platform of returning to power to local authorities, halting use of Shannon airport for military transit flights, and making Galway city a “beacon of peace”.
