Former Ireland international Seani Maguire is looking for a new club after Carlisle United confirmed that he was among eight players released as part of their revamp following relegation to League Two.

Carlisle knew in advance of the season finale on Saturday that they had been relegated to the fourth tier, with a tally of 30 points from 46 games as their fate was effectively sealed by a dismal run of 11 defeats in 12 games from January to March. United have now released eight members of that squad, including Maguire and former Ireland U21 cap Corey Whelan, while Irish underage caps Sean Grehan and JJ Kayode return to their parent clubs after unhappy loan spells with United.

Maguire (29) joined Carlisle at the start of the season from Coventry City and scored twice in 29 games. His availability as a free agent could spark interest from League of Ireland clubs in the former Waterford, Sligo Rovers, Dundalk and Cork City player.

Ex-international Aiden O’Brien is also on the move as he’s been released by Shrewsbury Town. Capped five times at senior level (2018-2019), O’Brien failed to score in 12 games for Shrewsbury having spent part of the season on loan to Sutton United.
