Billy Byrne won his All-Ireland medal in the autumn of his career. Wexford’s moustachioed super-sub was 36 – validation, finally. He carried on for another couple of seasons and then slipped seamlessly into the South-East Radio commentary booth, alongside Liam Spratt and fellow ’96 hero Tom Dempsey.

“Basically I’ve been at every match for, I don’t know, 20 years – since I retired!” he confirms. “There wouldn’t be too many I’ve missed.”
