Eddie Brennan: Antrim show Tipperary how a hurling David goes about taking down a Goliath – not in a wrestling match

David didn’t slay Goliath by taking him on in a wrestling match, but in hurling terms, that’s what Tipperary tried to do against Limerick – with painfully predictable results. They brought no clever thinking, no tactical nuance, against the champions. That’s just never going to work.

They tried to go with a sweeper, which backfired. One thing Aaron Gillane is very comfortable with is two lads marking him – and it allowed Limerick a platform to build possession around that middle third. If you’re going to take out Limerick, you have to be very brave. You also have to convert chances. Tipp coughed up a good goal chance early in the first half, and after that, Limerick just caught hold of them and choked the life out of them. It was a slow, painful death.
