Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board (WWETB) hosted a joint Symposium – Connecting Through Learning… Learning Through Connecting with South East Technology University (SETU) last Friday.

The partnership event highlighted the everyday experiences of both Further Education and Training (FET) and Higher Education (HE) practitioners. It explored lessons learned in both provisions and was delivered in multiple presentations formats to over 175 delegates from both FET and HE backgrounds, in addition to the panel for the event.

The presentations also shared good practice, current research which informs policy making, while sharing the learner’s voice and experience. The varied topics included Learner Inclusion, Staff Engagement, Digital and Technology Exploration to name a few.

The opening address was delivered by Fran Kennedy, WWETB AEO of Community Education and co-organiser of the event, who asked the rhetorical question, why “connecting through learning, learning through connecting?”

Mr Kennedy said: “We know from our experience that learning is more than the acquisition of facts; it is the weaving of invisible threads that connect us as individuals and communities. It is the spark that kindles understanding, empathy, self-belief, resilience, and change. We wanted to pause for a day and reflect and explore what the words connecting and learning mean to us in our day-to-day work.”

WWETB’s Director of FET, Dr Lindsay Malone, gave the closing address where she thanked everyone who joined them and participated on the day. She said: “This symposium is an excellent example of collaboration between WWETB and SETU. This important event focused on picture, poster and formal representations which reflected the incredible work of both organisations in the promotion of key skills, inclusion and widening participation in tertiary education in the region.”

The event took place at Wexford College of Further Education and Training. The College brings together education and training across a wide range of programmes, including apprenticeship courses, part-time and full-time courses, and community education programmes.
