It’s another busy week in Sligo with lots of events taking place to suit all interests.

Have a look at our pick of the top ten events taking place in Sligo this week, there might be something that tickles your fancy.

ROAMER

The Model presents a very special live Late Night event with Roamer on Saturday May 11. Tickets are limited – get yours online at www.themodel.ie for €15. Roamer brings together four of Ireland’s most internationally active improvising musicians. Currently based in London, Cologne, Berlin and Dublin, all four musicians reunite regularly to compose and perform original music celebrating poetry and improvisation.

SLIGO ACADEMY OF MUSIC GALA CONCERT

The Sligo Academy of Music orchestras and teachers present a special evening of music on Thursday May 9 at 8pm featuring the Sinfonietta, Jazz Orchestra, Junior Orchestra, Perfect Harmonies Choir, SAM Harp Ensemble, Duly Noted, Sligo Community Orchestra and performances by the SAM Tutors.

SLIGO RECORD FAIR

The first Sligo Record Fair of the year takes place on Sunday, May 12. There will be lots of new stock on vinyl and CD. BUY - SELL - EXCHANGE and entry is free. The event, taking place at the Yeats Society, begins at 11 and continues until 5pm.

TEENAGE THEME NIGHTS

Teenage Theme Nights has been providing a platform for older teenagers to perform with their peers in a professional, safe and friendly environment for over 10 years. This May, join organisers for the 32nd show in the ever-popular series - celebrating the class of 2024 in showcasing their final Teenage Theme Nights performance, taking place at Hawk’s Well on May 11 and 12.

POETRY WORKSHOP

Join Maeve McKenna at Sligo County Library on Friday, May 10 for a very special poetry workshop on the theme of ‘Music of Our Generations’ where participants discuss songs from their younger years and from that, explore how to put these memories into a brief memoir which will then be shaped into a poem. BEAT IT!

Sarah Middleton’s Beat It dance school of Strandhill, Sligo, is coming back to Hawk’s Well this year with a bang from May 13-15. Beat It dance school will be performing a mixture of dance with dancers aged 3-18 yrs, they will include a variety of Lyrical, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, Jazz and Breakdancing.

MARK MAKING

Mark Making’ a two person exhibition by artists Tom Callery and Crona Gallagher is now open at the Hyde Bridge Gallery, Sligo. This exhibition is part of the Bealtaine Festival Sligo programme of events 2024.

VULGARIS

Vulgaris is a minimal multimedia meditation on the flower, fire, fox and other symbolism associated with Brid and Bealtaine and the personification of Ireland as a female entity. By artist Sarah Ellen Lundy, this exhibition takes place at Abhainn Studio Enniscrone on May 10.

SOLO EXHIBITIONS

Two solo exhibitions are now open at the Hamilton Gallery, Sligo. ‘AREA C’ by artist Eileen Ferguson and ‘HEADSPACE’ by artist Neal Greig were officially opened last weekend with an opening address by Eoin Mc Namee, novelist and screenwriter.

TRAD@LUNCH

Step into Hawk’s Well and treat yourself every Wednesday from May 8 to August 28 to a delightful array of culture. Enjoy drama, comedy, poetry, and music—all served up in special lunchtime shows designed to captivate and entertain. This Wednesday, May 8, sees Niamh and Séan Farrell perform as part of Trad@lunch in a free gig.
