Drogheda’s Women and Children's Refuge has been awarded a grant of €169,000 through the Domestic, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Services programme.

Local TD, Fergus O’Dowd, confirmed the funding and said it will play a pivotal role in meeting the growing demands of the service whilst expanding supports offered, including funding a part time childhood activity worker for the facility.

“Drogheda’s Women's and Children's Refuge has long been at the forefront of providing a safe haven for individuals and families escaping domestic violence situations. This funding will directly contribute to maintaining their exceptional standards of care and support, ensuring that those in need have a place of safety and healing,” said Deputy O’Dowd.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Manager Susan Keogh and the amazing team in the refuge for the exceptional dedication and support they provide to very vulnerable individuals and families.”

For over 25 years, the Drogheda Women and Children’s Refuge has been empowering women and children experiencing domestic, sexual and gender based violence and homelessness by providing support, a range of services and safe emergency accommodation.

The team, under Susan Keogh, manager of the refuge, works towards the prevention of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence through awareness raising and education.

DWCR serves a diverse range of families, primarily women and their children seeking refuge from domestic violence. They also assist women experiencing homelessness due to complex circumstances.

They have a total of six self-contained units designed to accommodate families, providing a secure and private space for a mother and her children. In addition, they have five single bedrooms available.

While their primary focus is on the Dublin and Northeast region, they extend their services to women and children from other areas who reach out in times of need.

If you are experiencing domestic violence or abuse, contact the refuge on Helpline – 041 9844550 or Freephone 1800 929999 or phone the Gardai.
