Driver in Laois caught speeding at 159km/h had taken cocaine and methamphetamines

A driver in Laois who was recorded travelling at nearly 40 km/h faster than the local speed limit, was later found to have cocaine in their system.

As part of the Bank Holiday Weekend operations, Laois Roads Policing Unit stopped a vehicle travelling at 159 km/h in a 120 km/h zone. The tax was expired 340 days and there was no insurance on the vehicle. The driver was also disqualified from driving.

The driver failed the roadside drug test for cocaine and methamphetamines. The driver was arrested as were the two passengers. A small quantity of cannabis was recovered from one of the passengers. The car was seized. “Court proceedings have commenced,” said a Garda spokesperson.

Separately, a Garda spokesperson said on Tuesday, May 7, that Laois Roads Policing Unit, who had been on patrol in the previous 24 hours, arrested two more disqualified drivers in Portlaoise town. Both drivers also had warrants issued for their arrest.

One driver was held in custody overnight before being brought before Portlaoise District Court on Tuesday morning this week. The vehicles were seized and court proceedings have commenced against both drivers, added a Garda spokesperson.
