The sun came out at An Riocht track at the weekend with over 600 juveniles and juniors competing for coveted county medals at the Kerry Juvenile and Junior Track & Field Championships.

Tralee Harriers have a strong history in relay running and won four of the girls titles (U11, U12, U13, U20) with the talented Aria Collins leading the U13s to victory on the final leg after coming through the heats and semi-finals to win the individual U-13 80m sprint.

The club’s stand-out U-20 female sprinter Amanda Duyile was a triple gold medallist, winning the U20 100m and long-jump, as well as running a super quick second leg of the 4 x 100m winning relay team,

Killarney Valley AC brought a huge contingent of 120 athletes to the Championships, and were also a strong presence in the relays, winning the Girls U9, as well as impressive running from their older female sprinters in winning the girls U15 and U16 races. The clubs inspirational sprinter Sarah Leahy is definitely inspiring these rising sprint stars.

Eoin Malik (St. Brendan’s) is quickly becoming one of the stars of Kerry athletics and set another personal best in his favourite event, the triple jump, to win the Boys U20 in a staggering 12.78m to take the Eamonn Fitzgerald Shield.

Two of the best young javelin throwers in the country at the moment are Sam O’Shea (Star of the Laune) and Kevin O’Shea (Farranfore Maine Valley). Sam (U13) threw the Javelin 34.12m, and just to prove it wasn’t a fluke repeated the exact same distance again. Kevin (U16) threw the Javelin 46.18m and made it double gold with a discus throw of 47.33m.

In the middle-distance events, there were two stand-out battles that had the large crowds screaming their support. In the Boys U20 3,000m, Zach Walsh (St. Brendan’s) and James Dillon (Lios Tuathail AC) renewed their rivalry over seven and half laps, with a final effort from Zach in the last lap securing the gold in an impressive time of 9.47.

The crowds were treated to two of the country’s top middle-distance female runners in the Girls U20 800m with 15-year-old cross-country star Meabh O’Connor (An Riocht AC) taking on track-star Molly O’Riordan (Killarney Valley). They immediately hit the front and glided stride for stride until the final bend with O’Riordan pulling a metre ahead, only for O’Connor to pull her back in the dramatic closing stages to take gold in a personal best of 2.21.16

In the Boys 200m, there were standout performances from young Sean Looney (An Riocht) clearly winning the boys U14, and the experienced national medal winner Cian O’Brien (Killarney Valley) taking the Boys U20 race ahead of the fast An Riocht duo, David Lane and Thomas Rohan. Cian followed up that run by winning the U20 100m on Monday in a time of 11:39 ahead of Oisin O’Regan (Killarney Valley) 11:81 and Thomas Rohan (An Riocht) 11:83.
