Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone were delighted to be selected as a beneficiary of Lough Lein’s 36th annual charity open fly-fishing competition that was held in recent weeks at Killarney’s middle lake.

This annual event is always a truly memorable day when anglers from counties Kerry and Cork and much further afield come to Killarney to support Lough Lein’s Annual Charity open Fly-Fishing competition.

Putting this competition together is a huge undertaking, but club chairman Corie O’Flaherty and his hard-working committee put their shoulders to the wheel and pull out all the stops, bringing together many anglers to compete for the coveted prizes.

The fishing club get great sponsorship from businesses people to support the event and of course it must not be forgotten all the fundraising done by the members of the club by selling sponsorship cards. All of this being for a great cause.

This year’s event took place on Sunday, April 28 and representatives from this year’s chosen charity were in attendance to meet with the Lough Lein anglers group who worked so hard to make the event a success.

And there can be no doubt it was a tremendous success with a cheque for €11,265 presented to Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone Christy Lehane.

In his acceptance speech Christy Lehane stated that the monies raised for Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone was beyond their wildest dreams saying that this is why Lough lein Anglers Association is such a successful club and to prove this even more the club is in existence for the past 36 years. In that time the club has raised more than €300,000 for worthy charities.

Christy Lehane told all present that this money would go towards paying the wages of the charity’s Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association Specialist Nurses and providing medical equipment for Motor Neurone sufferers in Kerry enabling them to stay in the comfort of their own homes for as long as possible.

Fundraising is never easy, Christy said, but with people like Lough Lein Anglers on our side gives our charity a great boost in fundraising and creating awareness of this terrible disease.

Finally, as Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone Christy Lehane also wished Lough Lein Anglers Association every success for the years ahead.
