There were great celebrations in the Great Southern in Killarney last Wednesday evening as past and present members of the Killarney Rotary Club gathered to celebrate 40 years of the club’s existence with the launch of a book all about the club’s history to date.
The book, which has recorded in great detail all of the great events and projects that the club has been involved in over its many years of service, was launched to great acclaim from all present, including including the Cathaoirleach of Killarney MD, Cllr. Niall Kelliher and Rotary’s Assistant District Governor, Grace O’Donnell.
The atmosphere was a relaxing one as old friends re-united met to chat and reminisce; one of the guests of honour on the night was John O’Shea, the Killarney club’s very first president all those years ago and he addressed all those gathered on the evening. He spoke about the club’s beginning all those years ago now before moving on to compliment the present day club members for their hard work on the book as well as wishing them well for the future.
Barry Murphy, President of Rotary Killarney for 2023-2024 had this to say about the night:
“The book was the star of the show and it sets the agenda for editions in the future,” adding that he was very thankful to everybody for making a special effort to attend the evening and he thanked all involved in its production.
John Shanahan, who is a member since the very beginning and still attends on a weekly basis, attributed the success of the club to its work ethic in working in the local community, with the local community and for the local community.
Celebrations continued as a 40th anniversary cake was shared – a gift from Daly’s Supervalu Killarney – and this left everyone with a sweet taste at the close of a very successful evening.
The book is available at €25 from Rotary members or by emailing killarneyrotaryclub@gmail.com.
