May Bank Holiday: top 6 events and festivals in Galway this weekend

The May Bank Holiday is upon us and Galway has something for everyone to celebrate the long weekend.

From theatre to vintage cars, from Galway city to Inishbofin, these are the top six things to do in County Galway over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

Connemara Hillwalking Festival

The Connemara Hillwalking Festival will take place in Leenane, on the shores of the Killary Fjord, from May 3 to May 5.

Their website reads: “Our primary objective is to provide you with an immersive experience, allowing you to discover the treasures of this vibrant community while basking in the breathtaking scenery, rich nature, captivating history, and fascinating geology along the Wild Atlantic Way.

“The meticulously organized walks cater to all levels of ability, enabling you to fully engage with the untamed landscape of Connemara. Our aspiration is for you to relish our region as much as we do.”

Galway Theatre Festival

Running from Friday May 3 to Saturday May 11, the annual Galway Theatre Festival is set to bring great theatre, circus, spectacle, and storytelling to the city.

Every year since 2008 the festival showcases the best of local and national artists, bringing “a fresh and lively programme of performance to the streets and venues of Galway”

Inis Iron Meáin

The unique race ‘Inis Iron Meáin’ will take place on Sunday, May in Inis Meáin, the middle of the three Aran Islands.

The race has been organised by Coláiste Naomh Eoin for over two decades and is famous for its scenic views.

Participants needs to register to the event by Wednesday May 1 and can choose between a 5km, a 10km or a more challenging 12km route through the stunning island.

Inishbofin Arts Festival

The Inishbofin Arts Festival will take place form Friday May 3 to Sunday May 5.

The small island will host a weekend packed with shows and performances, as visitors will experience “a tapestry of creativity with visual arts, mesmerizing music, captivating theatre performances, literary delights, amusing comedy and much more.”

Kiltulla & District Vintage Show

The Kiltulla & District Vintage Show will take place on Sunday May 5.

The event will include autojumble, vintage cars, tractors, trucks, motorbikes, stationary engines, diecast and model displays, old-time farming displays, kitchen and old-time cooking displays, butter churning, woodcarving and timber sawing, a dedicated children’s entertainment field, music and food.

A Taste of Galway Food Festival

Blas Na Gaillimhe (A Taste of Galway) food network & festival will start this week, celebrating Galway's unique year-round hospitality.

Taking place from May 1 to May 31, Blas na Bealtaine will celebrate people and food from across the globe through workshops, talks, events, and collaborations. From traditional feasts to innovative wine explorations, the festival offers something for every palate and every curiosity.
