GARDAÍ in County Cork have detected a driver travelling at 194km/h in a 100km/h zone on a road where two recent road accidents resulted in deaths.

The detection occurred on the N25 near Castlemartyr and was one of several incidents of speeding and other road traffic offences reported by Gardaí across the weekend during the nationwide ‘National Slow Down Day’.

County Cork drivers were amongst the worst offenders for speeding on the day, with another motorist caught driving 112km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Main Street in Charleville.

Units in Bandon Garda Station conducted high profile speed checks and a number of vehicles were detected exceeding the speed limit. Two cars were also seized, one for having no car insurance and the other for road traffic offences.

Meanwhile, Gardaí in Mallow got more than they bargained for when they stopped a driver for speeding, only to discover he also had no insurance, no NCT and two bald tyres. The car was seized and a court date will follow.

Gardaí also warned motorists to “think before flashing those lights” because, despite numerous vehicles flashing their headlights, a number of vehicles were still detected exceeding the speed limit.

Gardaí continue to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on Irish roads.
