Sarah Carey: It’s wrong to oppose greenways in hope of railways that might never happen

Regular readers know of my love for greenways. In our otherwise unspectacular village of Enfield, the Royal Canal Greenway has given us not just somewhere safe to cycle or walk, but a facility that has changed our quality of life. However it’s only now – and I’m years late to the party – that I’m learning about the row in Mayo between campaigners for a greenway and supporters of railway restoration.

Roscommon Herald columnist John Mulligan asked me to join him and fellow greenway advocate Brendan Quinn to observe the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Petitions discuss a petition signed by almost 27,000 people to build a Mayo greenway from Claremorris to Charlestown.
