Man (20s) and woman (80s) die following road crashes in Donegal and Cork

A man in his 20s and a woman in her 80s died following separate road crashes in Counties Cork and Donegal on Tuesday.

A male motorcyclist in his 20s died when the bike he was driving collided with a van shortly before 6pm at Ballinahina at White's Cross in County Cork.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and no other serious injuries were reported.

The road is closed and will remain closed until Wednesday morning with local diversions in place as Forensic Collision Investigators conduct an examination of the scene.

A woman in her 80s – the driver and sole occupant of a car – died after her vehicle crashed near Falcarragh, Co Donegal, on Tuesday afternoon. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries but was later pronounced dead.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:30pm on the N56, Ballina Road, at Falcarragh, County Donegal. Local diversions are in place and Forensic Collision Investigators are conducting an examination of the scene.

Tuesday’s deaths take the number of people who have died on Irish roads so far this year to 66 – this is 15 more than the 51 people who had lost their lives in the same period in 2023.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to both collisions to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Falcarragh area between 1:15pm and 1:45pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Gardaí in Cork are also appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
