Driver released from garda custody after teenage girl dies in single-vehicle crash in Wicklow

A teenage girl has died following a single-vehicle crash in Co Wicklow early this morning.

The fatal collision occurred shortly before 5am today at Slaney Park in Baltinglass.

The passenger of the car involved, a female youth in her teens, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body has been removed from the scene. A post-mortem will be conducted in the coming days.

No other serious injuries were reported.

The driver of the car, a male teenager, was arrested on suspicion of offences under the Road Traffic Act.

He was detained at a garda station in Wicklow under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and has since been released from custody.

"Investigations are ongoing and a file will be prepared for the DPP,” a garda spokesperson said.

The road at Slaney Park has reopened after Forensic Collision Investigators completed an examination of the scene.

Gardaí continue to appeal for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam footage) and were travelling in the Slaney Park area between 4.30am and 5am are asked to make this footage available to gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Baltinglass garda station on 059 6482610, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.”
