Tributes continue to be paid to Mr Lyne at home, who is remembered as “the only beloved son of Pat and Theresa and was also adored by his sister Claire and brother-in-Law Ken,” his death notice reads.

"Sadly missed by his aunts, uncles and cousins. John's loss has also deeply affected his large network of very close friends both here in Limerick, Canada and all across the world. We also remember his friend's and colleagues in PCL Construction, Sparwood, Canada.”

His family have thanked The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, who are working to bring his remains home to Limerick.

His funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.

Caledonians AFC have paid tribute to Mr Lyne, who played with the club for one season and “left a great mark” on the group with his “quick wit and smile”.

Others remembered him as a “character”, “the greatest friend” and a “true gent,” who was “modest, despite his skill and success on the football field” and a “pleasure to have known”.

Another described Mr Lyne as a “committed friend who never let distance get in the way of contact and connection,” thanking him for his friendship.

One remarked that “it is obvious from all the messages that he enriched the lives of all”, with another paying tribute to the man who “always brought a smile to our faces and we will never forget him”.
