Ireland has backed proposals to increase the amount of State aid EU Member States can give to farmers to €50,000.

At a meeting of EU Agriculture Ministers last week, a majority of Member States are said to have supported an increase in the so-called de minimis aid, a type of national support specific to the agricultural sector that can be granted without prior approval from the European Commission.
