It’s the ref’s responsibility to apply the rules, not fill an entertainment quota

Kevin McStay hasn’t told us whether he plays the stock exchange, but if he does, the investments are probably long-term and wise. Even amid the emotionally charged minutes after Mayo’s one-point defeat in the Connacht final, he had an eye on the future.

Many managers would have railed against referee David Gough after some crucial borderline decisions went Galway’s way late last Sunday, but McStay didn’t. He wouldn’t have heard Colm Cooper musing on The Sunday Game whether Gough “gave a few soft ones [to Galway] coming down the stretch”.
