Wicklow Africa Day

Entertainers and volunteers are sought for the annual Africa Day Wicklow celebration, which will take place on Saturday, May 18, in Burnaby Park, Greystones. Scrabble

Greystones Library has started a Scrabble club which meets every Friday afternoon from 2-4 pm. Please ring the library on 01 2873548 if you wish to join.

Darkness Into Light

The annual Darkness Into Light event takes places on Saturday, May 11 and the aim of the event is to raise awareness and support for mental health. The Greystones event leaves from the south beach car park at 4.15 am. Over in Bray, the walk departs from the band stand, on the seafront, also at 4.15am. Registration is still open online at darknessintolight.ie

University of the Third Age

The next talk will be given by local historian, Rosemary Raughter, at Delgany Golf Club, at 10.30am on Thursday, May 9.

Rosemary will talk about the Greystones children’s home and offer an account of the background, as the story ranges from Delgany to the back streets of Monto. There is a small charge of €5 to cover the cost of the venue.

Christ Church Garden Fete

The Christ Church Bray Garden Fete takes place on Saturday, May 18, on Church Road from 10.30am to 2.30pm and there will be a great day of music, food, stalls and entertainment, as well as the raffle, with the top prize this year €1000 cash, sponsored by EMC Property Maintenance.

Danns Gigs

The only live music in Greystones is back in May at Danns, with the splendid Big Muddy on the 10th, The Fisher Kings on the 17th, Johnny Rayge on the 24th and The Mile High Club on the 31st.

Historical Society

The next meeting of the Bray Cualann Historical Society will take place at 8 p.m. on Thursday May 16 in the Royal Hotel, Main Street, Bray, when Gerard White will present ‘A WW2 Maritime Disaster with Bray Connections’. All are welcome to attend. Admission is €8 for non-members.

The Bray Cualann Historical Society is always interested in new members and those wishing to join the Society can do so at the May 16 meeting of the Society in the Royal Hotel, Bray, or or log onto the Society’s website to obtain more information.

Signal Arts

Artist Alexandra Dewart is exhibiting ‘Northern Family’, at Bray’s Signal Arts Centre, which runs until Sunday, May 12, 2024.

Greystones Bowling

From the week beginning Saturday, April 27: Div 2 Saturday won all rinks and the overall versus Shankill. Monday Div 1 lost to Bray, Wednesday Div 2 also lost to Bray, Vets Div 3 lost away to Shankill and Vets Div 4 lost away to North Kildare, both of which were on synthetic rinks.

Bray Bowling

The new Summer League season is in full swing at Bray Bowling Club. The summer season, April-September, is the highlight of the inter club competitions. Bray Bowling Club will compete across all divisions, with 10 teams entered, with play on Saturday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Following a very successful Winter League campaign, hopes are high for the new season. Irish Lawn Bowls is a fully integrated sport with equal opportunity for all ages and abilities.

Open mic

El Troubadours Open Mic Night takes place in Butler & Barry, Strand Road, Bray, 8-10 p.m. every Wednesday. Everyone is welcome to either come along and join in or simply enjoy the music on the evening as it unfolds.

Bray Cloud 9

‘Unity in the community’ is the motto of the Bray Cloud 9 team, who run the furniture and bric-a-brac store on Quinnsborough Road, to support local causes. Drop in and have a browse.

Garda clinic

The community policing clinic is held every Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Kilcoole Community Centre.

The clinic is there for members of the public to drop in and for crime prevention advice, to get help with forms, such as passports stamped and driving licences, as well as other Garda services that can be attended to. Feel free to drop in and no appointment is needed.

Men’s Sheds

Bray Men’s Shed is now full. Greystones Men’s Shed meets on Mondays, at 77 Rathdown Park, from 7.30 p.m. Contact Jim Rice at 089 254 0586 for queries.

Purple House

Purple House Cancer Support provides a range of professional support services to people of all ages. It has a wide range of classes and programmes available both in person and remotely through its Purple House at Home Service.

Bray Active Retirement

Bray Active Retirement holds monthly meetings on the first Friday of the month in the Little Flower Hall at 10.30 a.m.

Membership is open to retired men and women aged 50 years and over.

The association offers a range of activities, including holidays, creative activities, learning programmes and sporting pursuits. Membership details are available at the Good Neighbour Mornings, Little Flower Hall, Holy Redeemer Parish, first Friday of the month at 10.30 a.m. (September to June).

Sanctuary Runners

The Bray Sanctuary Runners ‘Walk and Talk’ group meets at 7pm at Queen of Peace Church car park, Putland Road, Bray, on the last Thursday of the month. If a run is more your thing, the group meets at The Esplanade Hotel, Saturdays at 11.30 a.m.

Music Circle

Greystones Music Circle meets on the first Wednesday of every month at Greystones Library.

Open Door Day Centre

The Open Door Day Centre operates Monday to Friday on Vevay Road, Bray.

Open Door provides facilities and activities for adults with physical disabilities as a result of multiple sclerosis, stroke, motor neurone disease, spina bifida, road accidents and others. The purpose-built centre offers easy access to the various activities within the building. The centre also provides carers and their families with a well-deserved break during the week. Open Door is celebrating 40 years of supporting adults with physical disabilities.

WH Five Loaves

Wicklow Homeless Five Loaves drop-in day centre on Main Street, Bray welcomes volunteers from all walks of life. Volunteers and their contributions are key to its success and without them it would not achieve its objectives.

W.H. Five Loaves promotes the participation of student volunteers and although it is only short term it can be a meaningful experience, so get in touch if you wish to participate. Call 01 204 0960.

Lakers’ volunteers

Lakers supports adults and children with intellectual disabilities and runs over 60 activities a week for its 400 members.

Its centre is open six days a week and is supported by over 160 volunteers.

Volunteers are encouraged to take part in training opportunities within Lakers, Special Olympics Ireland and various sports bodies.
