It was revealed at the Senate recently that the OPW has completed the appraisal process on all sites identified for the new Courtown Coastguard station and a preferred site has been selected. Senator Malcolm Byrne was in the Seanad recently to discuss any progress made on the new Courtown Coastguard station. He was told that as part of this process, the Office of Public Works had conducted feasibility studies on the potential sites to ensure each site met the requirements of a Coastguard station and that there are no impediment to the proposed development.

Senator Byrne said that the OPW communicate directly with the Coastguard in Courtown and hopes a plan B is in place in case this does not work out. “I do not want to have to come back to this House in six months, pose the same Commencement matter to the Minister of State, and get the same three or four pages except the last paragraph will say that the commercial negotiations fell through and we are back looking for another site,” said Senator Byrne.
