Archers from everywhere made the trip at the weekend to the Irish Open Field championships 2024.

This championship, hosted by Wicklow Archers in the lovely Dargle Valley in Enniskerry on Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28, is one of the most prestigious of the archery year.

Competing for CúChulainn Archers were Alan Convery, Philip Fitzpatrick, Gilbert McClelland, Ryan Dougan, Peter Gilmore and Orla O'Connor.

The competition consisted of 24 targets set out in the forest which, on one day were at unmarked distances, so the archers must guess the distance correctly to get the best score possible, and on the second day at marked distances.

Competing in compound masters, Alan Convery came first, taking the gold medal. Also in compound masters, Philip Fitzpatrick took the bronze.

In the senior barebow (men), Ryan Dougan took the silver medal, while Orla O’Connor came third, securing bronze, in the female section.

A great weekend was had by all, with the sunburnt archers – agreeing that it was a challenging and enjoyable course – heading home tired but happy.

CúChulainn Archers meet in Dundalk and Ardee and hold beginner courses throughout the year. Enquiries to cuchulainnarchery@hotmail.com.
