MEMBERS of Ardee-based CúChulainn Archers joined fellow competitors from right across the country who converged on Co Wicklow for the Irish Open Field Championships.

This competition, hosted by Wicklow Archers in the lovely Dargle Valley in Enniskerry, took place on Saturday and Sunday and is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the archery year.

Competing for CúChulainn Archers were Alan Convery, Philip Fitzpatrick, Gilbert McClelland, Ryan Dougan, Peter Gilmore and Orla O’Connor.

The competition consisted of 24 targets set out in the forest which on day one were at unmarked distances, so the archers had to guess the distance correctly to get the best score possible. On the second day the targets were at marked distances.

Competing in Compound Masters, Convery came first, taking the gold medal, with his clubmate Fitzpatrick placing third, while in the Senior Barebow sectioin Dougan won the silver medal.

In the Senior Barebow section for women O’Connor came third, winning the bronze medal.

A great weekend was had by all, with the sunburnt archers - agreeing that it was a challenging and enjoyable course - heading home tired but happy.

CúChulainn Archers meet in Dundalk and Ardee and hold beginner courses throughout the year. Enquiries should be emailed to cuchulainnarchery@hotmail.com
