Thirty schools back ‘Go Yellow’ fundraiser in aid of health workers who saved Longford twin brothers

Longford twins Edward and Patrick McGlynn (12) have made a remarkable recovery to full health in a journey their older sister, Maria, together with three of her closest friends are marking in aid of the part played by healthcare workers in aiding their rehabilitation.

Maria McGlynn, Aoibheann Brennan Grennan, Ava Finneran and Shauna Nolan have been the driving forces behind a nationwide 'Go Yellow' fundraiser that has raised thousands of euro for Temple Street, Crumin Children’s Hospital and The National Maternity Hospital (NMH) on Dublin's Holles Street.

Thirty schools from across the country have been “going yellow” today in support of a national fundraising campaign to recognise the unsparing efforts of medics who miraculously saved the lives of twin babies from Longford who were born at just 24 weeks old.

Edward and Patrick McGlynn underwent a number of life-threatening surgeries during the course of a painstaking and emotionally taxing period, a spell which thankfully is now behind the pair.

Barely two years ago, Patrick went back to Temple Street for major surgery in a bid to rectify his airway which had been described as that of a three-year-old.

Those challenges allied to the pair’s remarkable recovery led their immensely proud older sister, Maria to kickstart a major fundraising drive to “give something back” to the healthcare staff of Temple Street, Crumlin Children’s Hospital and The National Maternity Hospital (NMH) on Dublin's Holles Street.

Maria, together with her close friends and Transition Year classmates at Meán Scoil Mhuire in Longford, Aoibheann Brennan Grennan, Ava Finneran and Shauna Nolan launched a ‘Go Yellow’ initiative.

The novel concept struck a chord with schools across Longford and the wider midlands region with pupils in several of those sporting yellow attire this morning in support of the campaign.

That rallying call has ensured the girls exceeded their €10,000 target in a show of support that has left the group deeply humbled.

“We have well over €8,000, we have €8,400 on the iDonate but we have exceeded our target,” said Maria.

“Melview National School raised over €1,000 and we have raised €800 in our own school, so adding that all on plus the 28 other schools that are taking part, we are well over target.

“There is 30 schools taking part across the country in Sligo, Donegal, Westmeath, Roscommon and Longford.

“It is incredible to see how people have got behind us and supported us with the work we have put in and it means so much to me, the girls and to my own family, to be able to give back this little bit to Temple Street, Crumin and Holles Street, it is amazing.”
