An investigation has been launched in County Donegal after sea swimmers reported concerns about the water quality along the coast.

A number of sea swimmers have made reports after they noticed issues in the water at Ludden Beach and Ned’s Points in Buncrana on the Inishowen Peninsula.

The swimmers reported a smell coming from the water along with discolouration and an oil like substance.

Councillor Jack Murray said he has received numerous reports of irregularities in the water and he has reported the incident to Donegal County Council’s Environmental team.

"I have been receiving numerous reports of an issue with the seawater at Ludden and Neds Point today.

“I have been informed that there has been no sewerage outfall in the vicinity but the council's environment section will investigate and find the source of the issue.

“Hopefully it's a natural occurrence and people can get back in the water as soon as possible,” said Cllr Murray.
